At Hartge Chesapeake Charters we've been chartering quality yachts to sailors since the mid-1940's. Our central location, on the West River in Galesville, MD, is less than an hour's drive from Baltimore or Washington, DC. This makes it easy to take a weekend and visit St. Michaels, Oxford or Annapolis - all popular destinations within a half days sail from our base. Spend a week on the Bay and include picturesque Solomons Island, Dunns Cove and the Little Choptank river on your cruising itinerary. Or, you can head north and explore Baltimore's exciting Inner Harbor, spend a day or two gunk-holing on the Sassafras River, then sail to Rock Hall for a delicious crab feast. There is so much to see and do on the Chesapeake Bay; you'll want to stay all summer!

Charter season on the Chesapeake Bay begins April 1st and ends November 30th. The most popular months are May, June, September and October, so you'll want to reserve early. Low season discounts are in effect from October 15th to November 30 and July 15th to August 20th.

All Yachts are well equipped with galley ware, charts, binoculars and some cleaning supplies are already aboard. When you arrive, you'll find ice in the icebox, water tanks topped off, and plenty of fuel in the tanks for your cruise. Most yachts have roller furling head sails, wheel steering, dodgers and awnings; please ask about specific equipment when making your reservation.

A reservation deposit of $300. is required for each yacht. The balance will be due upon boarding and may be paid by MC, VISA, check, cash or travelers check. A security deposit is not necessary; however charterers are required to pay a $50. (non-refundable) Loss/Damage fee which covers the charter skipper against small losses or damages up to $250. All yachts are insured, but in the case of negligence, the skipper is liable for the amount of the deductible.

Dinghies are available for use during your charter at a cost of $15. per day. Cruise-Air air conditioners are available for use on certain boats also costing $15. per day. If you have other special wants or needs, please ask us. We can usually accommodate you.

The Fine Print

Your charter will begin at 9am of the first day and end at 5pm of the last day. For an additional $60. you may board the evening before your charter is scheduled to begin. We will complete the paperwork and your on board check out and you may leave the dock at 9am the following morning. Your charter may begin on any day except Sunday.

Specially priced mid-week charters begin Mondays at 12 Noon and end on Thursday at 5pm. Mid-week charters may not be scheduled during holiday weeks and early boarding is not available.

We offer discounts to persons or groups reserving two or more boats at the same time. A 10% discount is awarded to those skippers whose reservations are received before March 1, 2010 and everyone qualifies for a discount during the low season periods. Please call for details. Sorry - discounts are not cumulative or applied to holiday weekends.

Your qualifications are important; to be sure your cruise is safe and enjoyable we'll ask the skipper to complete a sailing resume which is then subject to approval. We require the skipper to have experience on a boat similar in size and displacement to the one they will be chartering. If you are in doubt, we will be happy to help you select a boat after we have reviewed your resume.

Cancellations are sometimes necessary, so if you must cancel your charter please notify us as soon as possible. A fee equal to 10% of your deposit will be charged if you cancel or change your plans 30 or more days prior to the start of your charter. 50% of the deposit is forfeited for cancellations received 11-29 days prior, and cancellations received 10 or fewer days prior will forfeit the entire deposit.
